Environmental commitment

Our sociocultural season

Our environmental commitment is also reflected in our sociocultural programming. It features numerous conferences and film screenings followed by debates on the theme of ecological transition, allowing us to effectively contribute to raising public awareness. We have had the pleasure of welcoming speakers such as Rob Hopkins and Arthur Keller, among others. We also plan to create live performing arts productions from scratch (theater, dance, circus, performances, etc) that explore environmental issues, aiming to use art even more as a tool for civic reflections and awareness building.

However, we believe that beyond raising awareness, citizens need to acquire practical skills to engage more deeply in the transition movement. That is why we regularly organize a Repair Café as well as zero-waste workshops, which aim to provide participants with very concrete tools for environmental action. We currently offer 17 different workshops, including our "Eat Your Balcony" urban gardening sessions, leftover cooking, canning and biscuit making, upcycling and DIY natural cosmetics and household cleaning products.

Finally, all of our events, shows, and concerts are designed with sustainable scenography in mind. In doing so, we stand against the common practice in the cultural and event sectors buildings temporary sets or flooring for a single event only to discard all the materials afterward.

Our horeca and events activities

Sustainable and ecological solutions

La Tricoterie defines itself as an event agency. This means that our spaces are not simply rented to our clients (whether they are corporate or private) : we organise each event from A to Z.

This way of operating allows us to propose to our clients exclusively sustainable and ecological solutions and to object, if necessary, to certain choices they might make (for instance, if they wish to serve products that do not align with La Tricoterie’s values). By doing so, we raise awareness not only among our clients, but also among the guests and participants attending the events.

Bio and local products

We place particular importance on the products we offer, whether during the events we organize, as part of our brunch, at the bar during our activities, or in the dishes served through our takeaway service. The vast majority of these products are organic, seasonal and supplied by small local producers.

This attention to the origin of our products extends to our beverages : for instance, we refuse to sell our clients or public any drinks marketed by large multinational corporations or produced unethically. In doing so, our goal is not only to make an ethical choice, but also to raise awareness among our audience.

To take this reflection further, we have installed a reverse osmosis system to purify tap water, as well as a machine allowing us to produce our own sparkling water. We are also developing recipes for homemade drinks. These initiatives allow us to reduce the carbon footprint associated with bottle production and transportation.

On the way of 0 waste !

Our attention does not stop at the products we offer : it also extends to utensils, and particulary to single-use plastics. As a result, we do not use disposable spoons, stirrers, or cups, systematically preferring alternatives made of metal, edible materials, or ecocups. Our project is to maintain this momentum by moving toward a zero-waste bar featuring loose-leaf tea, coffe ground recycling, and bag-in-box wine containers. Our Sunday brunch is also designed to be zero-waste, notably featuring bulk sugar and biscuits, as well as the option for our customers to take home any leftovers in reclaimed jars.

Objective 0% waste

Our commitment to reducing waste also extends to minimizing food waste. In order to limit food waste as much as possible, we have established a partnership with L’îlot ASBL, which uses our unsold items and food leftovers to provide meals for homeless people or those living in precarious conditions.
This "zero waste" goal took a new step in November 2024 with the opening of Fringales, our counter located on Place Bethléem. There, we offer light meals for local residents and workers : and excellent way to make use of surplus food from our hospitality activities and cook it creatively to offer different sandwiches, soups, and daily specials every day !

Our buildings

Although our buildings are not (yet) passive, they nevertheless feature numerous installations aimed at improving their energy efficiency. These include the installation of solar panels, reinforced thermal and acoustic insulation, LED lighting and double-flow ventilation, all of which reduce energy loss.

Beyond these infrastructures, our environmental commitment continues in our choice of furnishings. Down in our basement, we have set up a workshop that enables us to practice upcycling and manufacture a large part of our furniture (tables, chairs, counters, etc.) from recycled materials. We also use as much clean furniture as possible, in order to avoid the carbon footprint of transporting materials and renting furniture.

All our spaces are cleaned using ecological cleaning products. These products are purchased in limited numbers, in high concentrations levels (allowing them to be diluted to use less) and in returnable containers whenever possible.

Future developments for our buildings include the installation of a beehive, the creation of a permaculture vegetable garden on our green roofs and the development of new urban agriculture initiatives.
